Marine Conservationist for a Day

Australia

Only have a day? Make it count.

Not everyone has weeks to give—but even one day can make a difference. Join marine conservationists on the Great Barrier Reef for a rare chance to snorkel with purpose. You’ll help collect data, support citizen science, and contribute to real reef protection—without needing any prior experience.

Choose from two incredible locations—Fitzroy Island or Green Island—and join experienced guides for a purpose-led day of citizen science, underwater discovery, and impact you’ll feel long after you’ve left the water.

Everything you need for a meaningful day on the reef.

Each experience runs with a small group and is guided by experienced marine conservationists. Whether you’re on Fitzroy or Green Island, your day includes:

  • Return ferry transfers from Cairns Reef Terminal

  • Snorkel gear and safety briefing

  • Guided citizen science activities (coral surveys, data collection)

  • Educational reef talks and Indigenous cultural insights

  • A picnic-style lunch on the island

  • Free time to explore or relax

No experience is needed—just curiosity, care, and a willingness to get involved.

Why It’s Different to a Tour

This isn’t sightseeing—it’s science in action.

You won’t find glass-bottom boats or guided snorkel safaris here. This experience is purpose-built for people who want to do more than just look.

You’ll be collecting data, helping monitor reef health, and learning how to observe the reef with a conservationist’s eye. It’s quieter, more grounded, and deeply rewarding.

This is for those who care about the future of the reef—and want their travel to reflect that.

Bring a Friend

Some things are better shared.

Contributing to conservation can be deeply personal—but it’s also something powerful to experience together. Invite a friend, travel partner, or like-minded adventurer to join you for the day.

You’ll learn more, see more, and reflect more—together.

The reef won’t protect itself. But together, we can.

The Great Barrier Reef is under pressure—from climate change, pollution, and human impact. Monitoring reef health is critical, but there’s far more to cover than scientists alone can manage.

That’s where you come in.

Your role as a citizen scientist helps expand the reach of conservation efforts—feeding real data into real projects that inform reef protection and policy. One snorkel. One island. One day. It matters more than you think.

Two stunning locations. One shared purpose.

Whether you choose Fitzroy Island or Green Island, your day contributes to real reef conservation. Each location offers something slightly different—here’s how they compare:

🟢 Green Island

  • Easily accessible, calm and compact

  • Shallow reef ideal for beginner snorkellers

  • Indigenous cultural insights and structured learning

  • Great for those wanting a relaxed pace with meaningful impact

🌴 Fitzroy Island

  • More rugged, with rainforest and reef to explore

  • Varied marine habitats and deeper snorkel zones

  • More physically active, with optional bushwalks

  • Ideal for confident swimmers and adventurous spirits

Both experiences include the same core inclusions—boat transfers, snorkel gear, citizen science activities, and guidance from experienced conservationists.

Snorkel for science. Learn with purpose. Help protect the reef.

Throughout the day, you’ll join experienced conservationists to:

  • Take part in citizen science snorkel surveys

  • Learn how to identify coral types, fish, and reef threats

  • Record and submit data to long-term reef monitoring programs

  • Participate in educational talks on reef ecology and restoration

No background in science or marine biology is needed—just a willingness to listen, observe, and contribute. Your presence supports both the reef and the people working hard to protect it.

This experience is open to people who are ready to get involved—safely and respectfully.

To join this program, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older, or 14–17 with an accompanying adult

  • Be a competent swimmer—able to swim at least 50 metres, float, and tread water unassisted

  • Be comfortable using a snorkel in open water

  • Respect safety instructions and be willing to work as part of a group

  • Bring a curious mindset and a care-first approach to marine environments

If you’re unsure about your suitability, feel free to get in touch before booking.

Cairns, Queensland is a tropical climate. You should use lots of suncreeen and drink lots of water to keep hydrated.

We run these experiences thoughtfully, not constantly.

We Use Humanitix

Every ticket gives back—even beyond the reef.

We’ve chosen to use Humanitix for all MC for the Day bookings because 100% of their platform profits go to global education projects for disadvantaged children.
