Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers offers an exciting opportunity for groups of international volunteers to have a very direct and powerful impact at the Malawi Wildlife Rehabilitation project where participants continue the important work undertaken by the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary.
The unique groups package offered at the Wildlife Sanctuary promotes wildlife conservation both at an international and local level. From wildlife rehabilitation to wildlife tracking and monitoring to outreach and educational programs, this ground-breaking project is setting standards not only in Africa, but around the globe.
There are various tasks available for volunteers to contribute to, depending on their own goals, passions and experience and what is needed to be done at the sanctuary. All tasks are grouped into 3 main components of the project. This allows larger groups to diversifying their skills by rotating between each component, and for individuals to try all three and choose which aspects they want to direct their effort and time. Training and supervision is provided on each component, and volunteers can take advantage of all opportunities to learn new skills and gain a better understanding of wildlife conservation, animal rehabilitation and community outreach.
The Wildlife Rehabilitation component is undertaken at one of the most regarded rehabilitation and rescue sanctuaries in Africa, with numerous accreditations from highly respectable animal welfare bodies (GFAS, PASA and Born Free). Animals are released back into the wild where possible, therefore, a strict no-touching of animals’ policy is in place. Volunteers help care for up to 200 individual animals including monkeys, baboons, owls, duikers, kittens and more and prepare enrichment activities for the animals, make behavioural observations and assist in general animal husbandry all while supporting an incredible initiative.
The Education and Outreach component allows volunteers to contribute to humanity as well as wildlife, with initiatives dedicated to educating and connecting with the local community.Unfortunately, some communities don’t have access to the same level of education or facilities as others, so this is where our program can help. Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers supports the Community Outreach Manager in preparing and delivering classes to local schools and orphanages about topics such as reforestation initiatives, farming diversification, health education on malaria and HIV/aids and the benefits of introducing markets to sell produce and artisan crafts. All this information and knowledge shared can make the local communities stronger, more sustainable, productive and healthier.
In addition to the comprehensive learning and outreach initiatives, Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers offer volunteers the opportunity to experience all that Malawi has to offer, such activities could include:
- Day-trip to Lake Malawi
- A tour of the local town and an opportunity to visit local markets (including the local chitenge or fabric market where students can have custom-made clothing made in local fabrics)
- Workshops, talks, and activities with the crew at the sanctuary on topics such as communications and advocacy, conservation initiatives in Malawi and the wider region, the future of the organisation etc.
- Walking safari on our large network of trails
- Evening activities such as movie nights on Malawi or conservation-related themes
- Chichewa language lessons
- Cooking lessons on how to make local food
A 2 week program is recommend to rotate through the three components available and gain experience in each of the areas whilst also allowing time to enjoy the exciting off-duty activities. We offer 24 hour support to all volunteers, also included are airport transfers, ground transportation to all activities and sites, accommodation, three meals per day, training, inductions and volunteers t-shirts so participants feel a valued part of the team.
Look beyond what you see. There are so many opportunities and possibilities to adapt the program to your objectives and interests. Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers is happy to accommodate your requirements and work together to create your perfect program.
